Bagra is a village in Jalore (Jalor) district of Marwar (in Hindi मारवाड़) region in Rajasthan state in India. Bagra lies 18 km south of Jalore town on Jalore-Sirohi road and is surrounded by many villages like Santhu (साँथू), Noon (Nun), Chura, Sarat, Akoli, Narnavas, Bibalsar, Mok, Dhanpur, Bhagli Sindhalan, Rewat, Kalapura, Dakatara, Bakra Road, Bakragaon, Rewatada, Dudsi, Dhavala, Bhetala, Siana (Rajasthan) , Deegaon, Nagni & Nabi

HISTORY

Bagra is an old village of Marwar Region in Rajasthan. In olden days, Bagra was famous in India for its trade in silver and gold. Since then, people use to say Hindusthan me Agra aur Marwar me Bagra. It is said that previously this village was situated near Modrana Nada (name of a water pond) with another name. Later on, Dingadi Rajpurohits founded this village near Sarnadi (name of a water pond) with another name which was a Sasan Jagir village of Dingadi Rajpurohits. Later on, this village was given to Aliya Jat in Jagir by then State. Dingadi Rajpurohits left this village permanently with Gadotara means they sworn not to eat food & drink water of this village in future. Bihari Pathans who were Rulers of Jalore granted Sasan Jagir of this village to Jagarwal Rajpurohits. Bagaji Jagarwal founded the present village Bagra in his name. Time to time, this village remained in the Jagir of Dingadi Rajpurohits, Jagarwal Rajpurohits, Mahajans / Jains, Sindhal Rathores & Champawat Rathores (Thikana Daspan). Before independence, this village was part of Marwar / Jodhpur State and it was a Jagir village of Thakur Durjan Singhji of Thikana Daspan. Rajpurohit Manji Jagarwal of this village took part in Indian freedom Movement against British Rule in India before independence. Inspired by Shri Jai Narayan Vyas & Kisan Kesari Baldev Ram Mirdha, he participated in Marwar Lok Parishad & Marwar Kisan Sabha with Shri Jai Narayan Vyas, Mathura Das Mathur, Kisan Kesari Baldev Ram Mirdha, Nathuram Mirdha & Narsingh Kachhawaha. During agitation for abolition of Jagirs in Rajasthan Rajpurohit Manji Jagarwal also participated in Marwar's famous Kisan Sammelan / Satyagraha in Dabra, Rajasthan village of Nagaur District in Rajasthan in March 1947 known as Dabda Kand (also known as Marwar's Jallianwala Bagh Kand). There is a big & old water tank in Bagra known as Aliya Talab which was constructed by then Jagirdar Aliya Jat with huge expenses. Bagra village is birth place & Tapobhumi of many Hindu & Jain Saints.

PEOPLE

Bagra has population of 9661 (2001 census). People of all communities like Mahajans / Jains, Rajputs, Rajpurohits, Shrimali Brahmans, Rawal Brahmans, Pushkarna Brahmans, Agarwals, Maheshwaris, Sonars, Vaishnavas, Goswamis, Suthars, Rabaris, Ghanchis, Kumhars, Chheepas, Sens, Lohars, Kotwals, Pinjaras, Meghwals, Sargaras, Mochies, Bhils, Damamis / Dholis & Harijans live in Bagra village. Over the last years, many families have migrated to others states of India. Many of them now live in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Chennai and Mumbai. In Andhra Pradesh, they are concentrated in cities of Hyderabad, Kakinada, Cuddapah, Eluru, Narsapur, Nellore, Rajahmundry, Samalkot, Vishakhapatnam, Peddapuram, Vijayawada, Gudivada and Guntur. In Karnataka, they have settled in Bijapur, Bangalore and Mysore. Over last few decades, some new people have settled in Bagra.

Local Shree Chintamani Parshvanatha Jain Temple. This is the main Jain temple of the village. It is situated in the centre of the village. It is a big and splendid temple. It was renovated about 100 years ago under guidance and by inspiration of Gurudev Srimad Vijay Acharya Rajendrasuri‎. Shri Mahavir Swami Jain Temple, Bus Stand Bagra. Modeshwar Mahadevji Temple and Jalandharnath Mahadevji Temple. Baba Ramdevji and Thakurji Lord Krishna Temple. It is at Bus Stand Bagra. It has deities of Baba Ramdevji and Lord Krishna and Radha. It is the main temple for villagers. It is currently being reconstructed and renovated by contribution of all villagers under inspiration & guidance of Seth Shri MangiLalji Bhabutaji Ghodawala. Vaniyeshwar Mahadevji Temple on a hilltop on south west side after crossing rail tracks. Jageshwari Devi/ Jwalamukhi Devi Temple of Kuldevi of Rajpurohits near Bus Stand Bagra. Nilkanth Mahadevji Temple near Bus Stand Bagra. Than of Junjar Jorji Jagarwal (Mamaji Bavji) at Gundariya Bera Bagra. Than of Junjar Kevaji Jagarwal at Dhibda Bera Bagra. Than of Junjar Bhutaji Jagarwal at Padar Bera Bagra. Step-well - There is a beautiful Bawdi behind the Mahavir Swami Jain Temple. It was the main source of water for drinking and domestic use for the villagers before 1968 when they got tap water. There are bathing and washing places with water flowing from the Bawdi through oxen-driven chain. Nearby Jagnath Mahadevji Temple a very old Lord Shiva temple & Matha about 13 km to east of Bagra situated in Esrana Hills ( part of Aravalli Hills ) where present Mahant / Gadipati is Shri 1008 Shri Ganga Bhartiji Maharaj disciple of Late Shivlokvasi Shri 1008 Shri Somvar Bhartiji Maharaj . Baba Ramdevji Temple also known as Gayatri Ashram on Bagra - Santhu Road. Holy Ashram of Bal Brahmachari Shri 1008 Shri Shankar Swaroopji Maharaj disciple of His Holiness Pujyapad Jagadguru Shankaracharyaji Maharaj of Dwaraka Pitha . HOW TO REACH

Its railway station name is Marwar Bagra and is on the Samdari-Bhildi section of North Western Railway. The Railway Board proposes to convert this meter gauge route to broad gauge in near future. Bagra is well connected to all nearby towns by all weather roads. Buses ply through Bagra to all major places. Taxis are available at all times for nearby places.
